MELONS

Many refuse to believe that the melon, sweet tasting as it is, can still be healthy. However, cantaloupe, watermelon and other melons are very rich in nutrients.

For instance, water melon have what we call a low glycemic index, which means your blood sugar levels will not rise from eating water melon. This is good for your weight as well as for your health. 100 grams of water melon contain 30 calories. That means that you will get 150 kcal if you eat half a kilo of water melon, which is relatively low when we know that an average person needs around 2500-3000 kcal per day. In comparison, 28 grams of potato chips, 27 grams of milk chocolate or 75 grams of vanilla ice cream also contain 150 kcal.

However, watermelon is more than just water and sugar. It is also rich in antioxidants, especially lycopene, a type of antioxidant also found in tomatoes. The redder the melon, the more lycopene it contains. Lycopene is important for cardiovascular health, reduces the risk of prostate cancer in men, diabetes type 2. Melon can also reduce sunburn and may be important to bone health.
